Sustainable Development

According to the World Commission on Environment and Development, sustainable development, “meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”  Since the worldwide consumption of synthetic resins is well above 100 million metric tons per

year, the large quantities of synthetic resins that could be replaced by Cerestech’s Terraloy™ would have an enormous impact on an industry that has, in the past, been entirely dependent upon non-renewable fossil fuel sources.

The Cerestech blend technology replaces large quantities of synthetic resin with thermoplastic-starch (TPS) which is comprised of annually renewable resources such as tapioca, corn (maize), wheat and potato. Products made with Cerestech’s Terraloy™ Eco series contain at least 25 percent of annually renewable bio-based materials. The Terraloy™ Eco series results in significant reductions to greenhouse gas emissions and non-renewable energy requirements. The Terraloy™ Bio series is a high performance biodegradable product.

A number of countries are putting legislation in place to discourage the use of non-renewable resources.  As more and more countries join in this trend, the relevance of incorporating a sustainable solution such as Terraloy™ will only increase.

Recycling

Terraloy™ Eco series is one of the few sustainable plastic offerings that can be effectively recycled with little loss in performance.

In addition, Cerestech’s polymer/ thermoplastic starch blend technology presents a clear benefit to processors using recycled resins in their products. Terraloy™ is an excellent replacement for the pure polymer component normally added to recycled products. The presence of a significant quantity of annually renewable resource further improves the green quality of the end product
